Capital Campaign

Did you realize that capital campaigns are not just for building or renovating a building? Capital campaigns can also be for endowments, programs and specific projects. What makes a capital campaign unique is that it is a campaign with a specific financial goal that has a direct focus and a set end date.

If time wasn't an issue the best way to develop your capital campaign is by beginning with a feasibility study. Identify a campaign cabinet - which consists of board members and agency volunteers. Cabinet members are the people who will develop and implement the campaign - if approved - so make sure they are the people who will stay focused for 18 months to two years - and who are risk takers.

Let's assume that the staff and volunteers have decided to implement a capital campaign before hiring counsel or developing and completing a feasibility study - now what? Well, our experience shows that a feasibility study is still important - however, rather than focusing on "should we do a campaign and is this the right time?" - we focus on the excitement of this new campaign and look to build this excitement throughout the community. Maybe the most important aspect of the study will be getting an objective view of what the community knows and/or thinks of your organization. This information will be invaluable in building your case statement and your new PR materials.

In our next newsletter we will look at how to identify and secure the much needed campaign leadership.
