We have heard, time and time again, that special events can be time consuming and labor intensive and do not yield the necessary results.

Well, I am here to tell you why that might be true for some organizations, not true for most, and why, in the long run, they are exactly what most organizations need to booster their revenue stream, volunteer involvement, major gift opportunities, and visibility in the community.

Organizations that have been funded primarily by government grant dollars are beginning to realize that government money is not as readily available as it used to be. This is also true of United Way money. And, most organizations have not prepared themselves for this shortfall of revenue.

Also, organizations that are understaffed cannot begin to imagine having another thing on their plate, especially a time consuming special event.

WHAT TO DO, WHAT TO DO?!?!?!
As consultants, we have been approached by many organizations that have found themselves in one or both of these situations. They have programs that need to be funded at the same financial level, if not a greater one, and government and United Way money is being reduced, or in some cases, going away completely. Another reason is they need more visibility in their community, more money to support the programs they implement and no one to run a special event.

They also do not have a great presence in the community since, by being funded through grants, they haven’t had to step out of their comfort zone and make themselves seen in the community. They have not had to approach the corporate community and individual donors asking for contributions and many in the community don’t know the organization exists.
